Lapels
Styles change from season to season; however the width of the best lapel is generally between 3 to 4 inches. Usually, but not always, lapel and tie width should be the same. Also consider your build and body structure. If you have a large build, lapels and ties that look normal on someone else will look smaller on you. The width of the tie should be in proportion to your size.
Length
Since jackets come in different lengths, depending on a person’s height, there is no set length; the perfect length will just cover your seat. It is important to make sure you do not wear your jackets too long since a jacket that is too long will make your legs appear shorter. Jackets that are too long also have the effect of making you appear stout.
The top button on a two-button jacket and the middle button a three-button jacket should sit below your natural waist. A jacket that is too short won’t hang properly, and will look odd.
The Fit
The perfect fitting jacket will not have any creases or bulges and should lie smoothly in the front and back when standing in a relaxed position. The lowest button should be half-concealed by the fabric of the jacket when buttoned. A jacket that fits well will look great and feel great.
